Writing
Barry began his writing career at an early age. (Sorry, no dates are available) He was a member of the Liverpool Youth Theatre and wrote in conjunction with another member, comedian Alexie Sayle. It all started from there. He struggled in his early years as a writer and decided a proper job was needed to supplement his income so he joined the Fire Service. Periods of inactivity and long nights gave him the ideal opportunity to pursue his writing. This was supplemented by spot of part time hearse driving. An ideal grounding for comedy!!!
He wrote gags for Dave Allen and the Two Ronnies before teaming up with Ken Dodd for an on off relationship. He was the writer of Ken Dodd’s palace of laughter radio series, with his co writer Roy Dixon, which has since been awarded cult status. Dixon and Roberts wrote for many shows including all those mentioned plus the likes of The Grumbleweeds and even Little and Large. (Hates to admit to that one). They worked with the legendary Bob Monkhouse and June Whitfield on a show called Punchlines.
Barry won the BBC radio play award in the 1980’s but concentrated on comedy. He and Roy moved into sport and wrote for the Saint and Greavsie show from it’s humble beginning. After splitting with Roy he turned to writing professionally and continued a career working occasionally for the News Huddlines with Roy Hudd and was programme associate at Central Television in Birmingham. He has gone on to write and illustrate books for Ian St John, Jimmy Greaves, Tommy Docherty, and his own Travehell.
He has written speeches for many celebrities and sportsmen.
He still writes speeches professionally for celebrity and business clients. Be it their after dinner, sales conference, daughter’s wedding or mock presentation.
